Without effective postural setting, all the strength training in the world will be ineffective in healing from your shoulder, neck, back, hip/pelvic pain and beyond

How good are your planks? Do you hold for 30-60 seconds and are shaking like a leaf and holding your breath by the end? Not only can I almost guarantee that you stopped effectively engaging your core within the first 15 seconds if this is the case, but you were also likely far from straight through your spine and were using shoulder muscles to do the job of your spine. The same story rings true for many exercises involving the shoulders and neck. If you are setting your posture by rolling your shoulders back, PLEASE STOP.

The key is to learn how to feel and gently activate the muscles of your upper back and spine. That way your spine supports your spine and the shoulder muscles have a stable base to draw from. The three basic postural setting movements in this video are actually derived from the BoneFit training manual developed for extension based strengthening in cases of Osteoporosis. However since I learned them nearly a decade ago, I haven’t met a SINGLE person who hasn’t benefited from their use. Master this skill, and every rep you do of every exercise you know will be strengthening a healthier and more efficient position in space building resilience against gravity for years to come.
